Commencing GPT1 at Boddington Medical Centre has been one of the most enriching chapters of my medical journey thus far. There's a particular kind of warmth that this rural practice offers — where patients greet you by name in the supermarket, where a quick consult often becomes a meaningful conversation, and where you genuinely feel part of the community you're caring for.
I have been incredibly fortunate to train under a supervisor who is not only clinically brilliant but also deeply invested in my growth as a doctor. Dr Marlenes’s teaching is patient, practical, and tailored — she knows exactly when to guide and when to step back, and her support has been instrumental in building my confidence as an independent practitioner. I've come to view her not just as a supervisor, but as a mentor, I'll carry with me well beyond this placement.
The wider team of nurse, reception staff, practice manager and fellow colleagues are equally friendly and approachable. Their professionalism and daily banter make every shift a pleasure, and they've gone out of their way to make me feel like one of the family.
Beyond the clinic walls, Boddington itself has been a delightful surprise. It's home to one of Australia's largest gold mines and boasts a wonderful sculpture walk and riverside parklands that make for a perfect post-clinic stroll. The mix of farmers, miners, and multigenerational families makes for a wonderfully varied caseload — true cradle-to-grave general practice in the best sense.
I would highly recommend this placement to any registrar looking for excellent supervision, a supportive team, and the rare chance to experience general practice the rural way.
